RuPaul's Drag Race Season 5 Episode 6: Can I Get an Amen? Recap (Part Two)

I realized the GIFs were choking themselves because there were so many this week, and they keep stalling out, so I'm breaking this post into two parts.

On the runway, the camera zooms aggressively at this week's contenders for Best Breasts on Panel. I award it to Anita Pointer!

I've had a theory since I began watching RuPaul's Drag Race that Santino is desperately, hopelessly in love with RuPaul. Am I right or am I right? After all, this is the mooning face he always gives her at the beginning of the runway shows. Watch for it and you'll see that I'm right.

As Alyssa so eloguently said, "I knew he was a clownfucker from the jump!"

Category is: Favorite body part! COMMENCE. SHAKE. DOWN.

Coco is showing her heart. Getting down on crafty-campy-hobby-lobby runway outfits was soooo last week.

Alyssa is showcasing her legs, and they're a gorgeous pair of gams indeed. Those shoes are making love to her shapely calves. She and Alaska are really the only two who successfully completed this runway challenge to its original intent.

Jade has chosen to feature her arms, but unfortunately, her arms are the only part of this ensemble that I'm not looking at. She literally has a glittery heart pasted onto her crotch. It does not impact the overall taste level of her outfit.

Jinkx doesn't say what specifically she's featuring, but I'd say it's her back, duckies.

My girl Ivy is everything. I know I'm not the only one who saw this look and squealed, "KNOPE WINS!" For the second week in a row, Ivy has served up my favorite runway look.

Roxxxy's body and confidence are both undeniably hot. Roxxxy's genetic heritage is, what? Half Jimmy Carter, half George Washington Carver?

(...it's a peanut butter joke, darlings.)

Dazzling in lavender, Alaska is featuring her sexy, razor-sharp clavicle.

(I'm 90% convinced she's wearing Sharon's prize from Episode 3 last season.)

Oh. Yes, Detox. Yes. No complacency this week: tip to toe, it's for the gods. (Also: that is some expert-level tucking, right? I thought I understood how tucks worked, but clearly Detox has secrets I don't know.)

The video for "Can I Get an Amen?" is adorable and amazing. It's everything I love about this show. I'm smitten. Buy it on iTunes.

Judging is quick and mostly-rough on the girls. The judges didn't respond well to Coco's outfit, and were even less-impressed by Coco's attempt to pass the buck to Detox. They liked Alyssa's enthusiasm for the challenge, if not her actual singing, and her look tonight is on-point. Jade lost points on her timid singing and garish outfit.

If you can't love your tuck, how in the hell are you... err. Maybe choose a different way to love your tuck.

They love both Ivy's singing and her outfit. Jinkx's singing brings rave reviews too, but Michelle clocks Jinkx on her theater-heavy contouring. They cut to a reaction show from Coco and Alyssa, and I suddenly wonder if Michelle also commented on Coco's makeup tonight. Blend, blend, blend, darlings.

Roxxxy gets rave reviews for her runway, but as soon as Santino begins criticizing Rolaskatox's singing, Detox reaches for Roxxxy, and Michelle becomes suspicious. If you follow Michelle on Twitter, you already know: she hates cliques. Michelle endured a hellish amount of bullying growing up, and cliques of self-appointed cool girls are high on her list of Evil Phenomena, particularly on this show.

Michelle rides Detox for "relying on crutches" with her jaw waggling. She moves her equivocating critique on to Alaska, accusing her of for holding back.

RuPaul takes it a step further, accusing Alaska of "hiding behind schticky character" and not having the same heart as Sharon Needles. Every time I rewatch this, I fume: for all their various strengths, almost none of this season's queens have shown vulnerability on the runway. I realize that we only see moments from an hours-long critique, but from what we've been shown, this is a group with a collectively strong poker face. Where's Roxxxy's vulnerability? Where's Ivy's? Where's Jade's? Last season, we constantly saw hearts on sleeves on the runway: yes, when she thought she was in trouble, Sharon would gulp for air like the oxygen in the room had gone thin, but we saw armor cracks in Milan, in Jiggly, in nearly everybody at some point or another. When we don't see that in this cast, why is Alaska the only one getting unfavorably compared to last season's winner? Or am I misinterpreting what RuPaul means when she says "heart?"

To smash-cut to Twitter again, RuPaul posted this, the day after the broadcast.

Good advice. Was it Tammy Faye, or just a tattoo of her? RuPaul must have felt subconcious guilt after watching the way he made Alaska sob in Untucked.

The judges deliberate: Ruth Pointer calls out Coco's highlighting; Michelle describes Jinkx's outfit as coming from "twenty different eras" (y'all, she's a self-described "gorgeous anachronism," twenty different eras is practically what it says on the tin) and is even harsher on Detox and Alaska than during runway critique, effectively saying that she doesn't expect to see anything more from either of them.

Meanwhile, back in the Interior Illusions lounge...

Detox sings it out. "Can I get a stiff drink!" After that runway, several of the girls have earned theirs.

We take a moment for some ugly sizism cackling. Barf. I know they're just trying to get a rise out of Alyssa, but can I get Latrice or Jiggly in here to snap these twigs, please?

Coco and Jade have worked out that they're definitely lip synching. Jade owns her critique as fair, and optimistically resolves to give her best lip synch and take whatever comes, but Coco needs to squabble with Alyssa about whether it was okay for Alyssa to give (from my perspective, at least) a totally truthful and diplomatic answer to RuPaul's question. Miss Thang wishes they'd just fuck and get it out of their systems, and in this moment, I'm inclined to agree.

We move on to Alaska, who is devastated that RuPaul isn't seeing Alaska for who she is. It's an unfair situation, and nobody has an easy answer. Honestly, I think that out of all the girls, Alaska has shown perhaps the most earnestness to please on the runway: before the season began, I wouldn't have necessarily guessed that she had the capacity for glamour and polish that she's demonstrating week after week on the runway. She's keeping her core campy side to the main challenges, and using the runway to demonstrate her versatility in high fashion and soft, femme beauty. In doing so, she's been doing everything in her power to ward off unhelpful runway comparisons to Sharon. So if they can't come for her fashion, they have to come for her heart? It's bullshit. All the queens know it's bullshit, too. Alaska considers shaving down and hitting the runway in a slingshot--maybe that would be vulnerable enough.

Vodka-branded tears.

We move to the Gold Bar, where Alyssa's dad has learned a couple new things since he and Alyssa last spoke: how to Skype, and how to let go of his cruelty and pride to embrace his son. "Now I'm not ashamed to tell people that my son's gay." Alyssa's dad is crying, Alyssa and the other queens are crying, I am crying. He tells Alyssa, "I know it's not an MVP in football or baseball, but hell, I'd be glad to set this crown up on the mantle." It's an incredible moment.

Alyssa's sharing this moment with the room, of course, which makes it all the more beautiful: this is a sister-bonding moment that nobody can take away from these queens, and we're lucky as an audience to share it with them. Coco begs Alyssa to forgive her father: she never got the reconciliation that's on Alyssa's horizon. I'm whimpering to the TV, "Just hug it out. Then you don't have to fight anymore." My fingers are crossed for everybody.

We can't be maudlin forever, though! Several queens head back to Interior Illusions, leaving Coco and Detox to discuss professionalism while Jinkx and Ivy give each other the giggles. Given all the shade Coco has thrown at Jinkx, I think she's earned her cackling schadenfreude.

Or maybe she's just a mean drunk. You know I'm taking her side either way.

Back on the mainstage, Ivy is the winner! When I first saw the episode and they flashed the prize, I thought, "Oh, she won a trip!" ...no. She's getting a suitcase and thirty dollars' worth of travel bullshit from Target. Production, do we still want to talk about who, in this affair, is phoning it in?

Still, the win itself is what matters, and I'm happy for her; it's an overdue win for a talented queen. After the other queens are declared safe, it's a battle of the wacko bodysuits. Coco and Jade are so excited, and they just can't hide it! I absolutely love lip synchs in front of the original artists--remember DiDa's spectacular turn of "This Will Be" in front of Natalie Cole?--and Coco and Jade both leave it all the runway. It's a great lip synch, but ultimately, Coco takes her second strike and rejoins the girls, while Jade sashays.

Next week: it's the reading mini-challenge, and we're roasting RuPaul! Yessss!

Totally agree, the comments to Alaska were harsh enough on their own but comparing her to Sharon? C'mon! That's not fair!
My hope is that this is going to lead to a bit of withdrawal from Rolaskatox on Alaska's part. I wonder if that wasn't the judges' intention? Either way, they could've said what they had to say without bringing Sharon into it.
That said, it made me like Alaska more. I'm going to be pissed if I don't have her and/or Jinkx in the final. Fingers crossed for some more bonding between those two next week.

I completely agree with fearofphotography - comparing Alaska to Sharon, and using that against her on the runway, is just absolutely mean and unfair. I'd almost expect something like that from Michelle, but I was surprised to hear that from Ru.
